How did you come about naming your brand?

The name Pretty Brave came from the 2 words we found ourselves using with our own children… “Aren’t you Pretty Brave!”

What was the inspiration behind starting Pretty Brave?

The Pretty Brave brand was born in Valencia, Spain. Our family moved there from New Zealand in 2010 for my husband’s work, when our kids were just 8 months and 2. Relocating to a new country meant leaving a career in advertising and graphic design, but I loved immersing ourselves into the amazing new culture and found I had time to play with new ideas.

I knew there was a gap in the market for fashion-led baby shoes. I was inspired by the Spanish and their love of leather and shoes (even the nuns have matching bags and shoes!) and wanted to embrace this while I was living there. My early research was an amazing journey where I would pack the kids in the car and drive 3 hours south of Valencia to where the heart of the footwear industry was. All the coms had to be done in Spanish, but I learnt an amazing amount about leather, shoes and an age-old manufacturing craft. It was an incredible experience that set me on a path to create Pretty Brave.

Who is an inspiration to you? 

Any mama who juggles family, work and life is an inspiration to me! My mum is my total inspiration.

Am I allowed to say my Roundabout change clutch!

Who are your top 3 favourite NZ mum businesses?

Band of Boys is doing amazing threads for boys, the clever lady behind Burrow and Be is an inspiration and of course the incredible So Beau Baby!

What’s your favourite part about your job? 

I love how every day is completely different. I usually spend a lot of time on the computer, but I am often with sleeves rolled and packing tape in hand. My favourite part though is always with pen and paper throwing the ideas down. An idea for me is never 2 dimensional and I love thinking about how a concept can flow from shoe design, to campaign, photography, clothing and packaging. The ultimate kick is seeing my shoes on bubbies in the street.

How much time do you spend on social media in a day? 

I would probably spend up to 1 hour a day on social media. Initially it was more, but now I try and sleep with my phone in another room so it doesn’t rule my life!

Do you have any advice on starting your own business? 

A good business has to start with an original idea. There is no point doing something that is already done and it won’t hold the test of time unless it has a point of difference. Having your own business is an insane amount of commitment but is also the most rewarding thing I have ever done (other than motherhood!).

What’s your biggest lesson you have learnt from starting your own business?

The need to wear many hats, but also the need to pass the hat on.

What do you have planned for the future of Pretty Brave?

This year is about growing with our little customers as we enter the toddler market, working on exciting collabs and developing new products… never a dull moment!
